Shirt Dress

Here is one of my first sewing projects with the new machine. I took an old shirt that didn't fit Phil, and turned it into a little dress for the munchkin who is STILL NOT WALKING! The kid can dance and she is starting to talk - but she has not yet found the need to walk.

The back of the shirt is the front of her new dress.

And the front of the shirt became the back of the dress. She makes it look pretty cute.

Chatting with neighbors. (up in that little alley/crack in the wall to our right)

Mean mommy wants Nadia to take 2 steps to give mommy a hug. Nadia is heartbroken.

But she also still has a grip on the wall, so maybe she'll live.

Hari Kemerdekaan

It's been a busy week here in Central Java as we have celebrated with all of Indonesia. Monday was their Independence Day (Hari Kemerdekaan). Their idea of a good time differs widely from ours, but we did our best to play along. We attended a big party at our local church, a huge neighborhood bash, as well as a ceremony and party at our school. Our neighborhood as well as our school have held ping pong tourneys for the past month, culminating in fierce championship matches this past week. There have been races of all kinds for young and old, and some things have been just plain silly. (For those of you who were wondering, no I did not have to play along in the eel relay race... I got out of that one... this time).

All the male students at our school raced to eat their kerupuk the fastest (it's a big, puffy chip like thing...)

Who won? Who cares

Here, our teachers take their turn. Our headmaster is on the far left. They all seem well practiced... and remarkably calm.

I took one bite of mine, and realized it was shrimp flavored, and that continuing could actually be deadly for me. What is more interesting about this photo is the look of sheer determination on my friend, Angie's face. I never knew she had it in her, but she actually looks vicious here. She won that round.

I won't even comment about this one. I was laughing so hard when I took the photo, I had to do it over 3 times before it was in focus.

Here are a few random shots from the past couple of weeks. We will post more about Indonesian Independence Day soon. We have some great shots of some very silly things...

But for now, here is our girl, doing various cute things.

Nadia and daddy playing in the pool.

Auntie Diane, this sweater has come in handy for some chilly mornings lately - Thank you! Grandma and Grandpa, you'll notice that she is "flossing" her teeth with one of the little dragonfly toys that you sent... :0)

Also, she has begun "talking" on the phone. It's so cute to watch her. She picks up my cell phone, puts it to her ear and babbles and laughs. Today, she discovered BUTTONS, and went crazy with pushing and pressing and chatting all the while.

Sew What?

Last week a couple of friends and I went to the local market... and bought sewing machines. Here is my "new" machine. As you can see, there is no cord... because it is not electric. It is an old fashioned treadle machine. I always thought these things were antique (as you may have as well), but nope. They are still being made fresh here in Indonesia! I bought mine used, and paid about $30. I took it apart completely and cleaned and oiled it, and now it runs so smoothly and quietly that all the sound it makes it the click of the pedal as it pumps the machine.

Who knows how long it will take me to get the hang of this thing... but i'm determined!

One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying...

...Purple-Potato Eater
Well, all except for the one-eyed, one-horned, and flying part... Check out these sweet potatoes! They're PURPLE! We call them ubi (say: oobee), and Nadia loves them. I think she's afraid I might take them from her - She's even shy about having their picture taken :0)
